Atlanta’s famous for its almost year-round temperate climate compared to other parts of the country. With only a few mild winter months we have a long outdoor living season, and our outside spaces get used virtually throughout the year. Our decks, patios and porches are often great “investments” that expand homes for easy and casual outdoor living.
Growing up in Buckhead I’ve had screened porches, patios, decks and covered decks in my homes over the years. Any covered outdoor space can be a huge improvement over an open patio or deck. That roof completely changes the outside livability, enabling you to have comfortable cushioned furnishings, floorcoverings, fans, lighting and entertainment. You can forget the uncomfortable metal and vinyl furniture, getting out the cushions and endless cleanup chores. Just step out and enjoy these outdoor spaces Paces Construction has created around Buckhead.
This covered stone and wood deck Paces Construction built just off Mt Paran includes both covered and open spaces for all weather enjoyment. The stone floor is actually supported by metal beams and a poured concrete slab to support the weight of the fireplace over a garage area. Cedar beams with 6” tongue and groove V-joint ceiling planks are a popular choice for a woodsy setting in North Atlanta. Fans, lighting, audio and recessed TV along with covered log storage make this an easy living space. On the adjacent open deck with eating area a painted arbor offers some shade from direct sun and has weatherproof lighting.
This casual outdoor roof cover was added over part of an existing Buckhead deck. The owners report that they often eat breakfast at this table just off their kitchen, sometimes in their bathrobes. Three large skylights brighten the porch area, but were designed to throw plenty of light into the adjacent interior rooms. Exterior rated fans and lighting make this space enjoyable during summer and evening hours, and gutters help minimize splashback so it can even be used in the rain. And during parties areas like this can be popular gathering spots almost year round.
This rustic space in the Buckhead “woods” utilized existing windows, which Paces Construction converted to doorways using 2 oversized 8’ mahogany doors to let plenty of light in the adjacent library. Having a seating area for at least 4 people, along with an outdoor eating area makes your space versatile and “expandable” for getting several couple together. Outdoor carpets like this one can get wet and quickly dry out without mildewing. A nearby grill is always a great addition. This deck used a combination of old cedar beams and new wood to give it an airy mountain feel. TV, stereo, 2 fans and a dimmable chandelier with corner spotlighting make this a great place to read, watch a ballgame, or have a few friends over for burgers.
This open pool house cabana in Buckhead has all the comforts of home just a few steps behind the main house. Bahamian style louvre shutter walls give a sense of enclosure but allow cross-breezes, while amenities like a fireplace, refrigerator, lighting, and TV make this a great space to unwind or entertain. Plenty of storage means no clutter required in this space. Soaring cathedral ceiling with limestone floor and countertops, exposed rafters and shiplap interior paneling add style and spaciousness to this award-winning space.
Even a small space, such as this Vinings entry area between the house and garage can be turned into an all-weather seating area with fan and stereo speakers. Large skylights are positioned again primarily for
getting maximum natural light into the adjacent interior rooms. Light sky blue ceiling adds to the outdoor feel of this intimate space.
All outdoor projects require attention to moisture – exterior grade materials and finishes can hold up much better than interior products. Cabinetry, fabrics, flooring, fans and lighting, as well as building materials and hardware can all be selected to withstand the elements and lower your maintenance. Fabrics like Sunbrella come in a wide variety of colors and patterns today, and outdoor rugs now mimic many indoor products.
Some people ask about bugs and outdoor living spaces around Buckhead, and we’ll always have some in Atlanta. Many of our clients have used monthly mosquito spraying services over the last few years and most say they get amazing results and it’s changed how they use their yards. As a resident along Nancy Creek with woods surrounding our home, my family seldom used our patio due to mosquitos. After hearing similar homeowners rave I called our pest control service and our results have been incredibly successful.
Paces Construction also builds screen porches, and many of these outdoor spaces also have grilling or other cooking options included – stay tuned for upcoming articles on porches and outdoor kitchen areas.
So enjoy your yards again and get some fresh air Buckhead!
